Principal’s Report

This week I would like to make mention of the fabulous learning support staff we have at Tallong PS. Mrs Hall comes every Tuesday and works in the classrooms supporting the classroom teachers and she also works with individuals and small groups focusing on Literacy and Numeracy skills. Mrs Hayes visits every second week to provide support to Mrs Hall as well as completing many individual assessments and /or carrying out duties for the classroom teachers that will better help them support individual learning needs within the classroom setting. These staff members have a wealth of experience and knowledge and contribute so much to the learning outcomes of the students at Tallong Public School.

Welcome Miss Laishah Matthews

Mrs Neale is taking some leave for health reasons and we are fortunate that Miss Laishah Matthews will be with us during Mrs Neale’s absence. Miss Matthews brings many skills to the position and I am sure the Koala’s will enjoy their time with her.

District Swimming Carnival

Four boys travelled to Mittagong last Friday for the District swimming carnival. A big thank you again, to parents that transported and attended on this day. The boys had a tough and competitive day but in true Tallong style put in their best effort. We are very proud of them.

Art Club Commences

In our first week of Art club, 7 students attended. In the second week 15 students attended. I think word has got around that art club is fantastic! Art club is on Thursday afternoons from 3:15pm- 4:30pm. Cost $2.

Cross Country Practise

During the month of March we will be practising for the cross country carnival. Students in years 3-6 may wear their joggers to school each day for this training.

Some Interesting Trivia

Since the inception of the Breakfast Club in May 2011 up until December 2011, 289 volunteers have fed 742 students! From August 2011 through to December 2011, 163 children attended Games club.

Coles Sport For Schools Vouchers

We were able to purchase a lot of sporting equipment thanks to the hard work of many in collecting and counting vouchers. A special thank you must go to the Tallong general Store for displaying the collection sign and for collecting so many vouchers on our behalf. Items purchase included: AFL goalposts, basketballs, soft cricket balls, handballs, a volleyball, swimming wrist bands and a tennis racquet.

Playgroup News

On Wednesday 7^th March at our playgroup, Alan Caldow and workers from Family Support will attend and chat to the parents about support networks available to families. Please come along and join them for an informal morning tea.

Playgroup is every Wednesday commencing at 9:15am.

Calling All Grannies…

The Tallong Apple Day Festival committee is calling for nominations for the Tallong Granny of The Year award to commemorate Granny Smith apples. They originated in Eastwood, NSW, in 1968 from a chance seedling propagated by Granny Maria Ann Smith. Nominations need to be 50 words or less. We encourage as many of our students as possible to get involved. Completed nominations can be lodged at the general store. Please call in at the office if you need another form.

Principal’s Report

The term is in full swing and the before and after school activities are up and running. The new art club on Thursday afternoons was well received by those who attended last week. A big thank you to Margaret Bottichio, Chrissy, Chloe and Heidi Wursten for their input.

We continue to have fantastic support from our community members with these before and after school clubs and the staff and parents are truly appreciative.

We also have so many parents that contribute in big ways and small and I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support to the staff and students at our school. It is this support that makes our school such a wonderful place.

Swimming Carnival

Yesterday’s swimming carnival was a great success due to many factors. Firstly the student’s behaviour was outstanding and all who participated gave their best. We had some students compete in the 50 Metre carnival for the first time and surprised themselves with how well they did. We were able to field a senior relay team and a small school relay team which were both competitive.

It was great to have Heidi Tozer, Liz McDonald and Sharon Williams there to cheer the boys on and help organise them for their races. A big thank you to Jeremy Porter for transporting some students, and the shade shelter, to the pool and then taking back to school some very muddy students and a muddy shade shelter. Thanks also to Kim Hall for assisting with transport and for lifeguard duties on the day.

Four students were successful in selection to the district swimming carnival. They are:

Jarrod Field: 50 M Senior Breaststroke

Riley Tozer: 9 years 50 Metre Freestyle

Tyson Lewis: 12 years 50 M Freestyle, Senior 50 M Butterfly

Kody Tozer: Open 100 M Freestyle, 11 years 50 M Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly.

On top of this Tyson Lewis was also awarded 12 Years Age Champion! Well done Tyson

Private Music Tuition

Miss A commenced private music tuition with 5 of our students last week. Feedback from the students was very positive and one comment was,… “that was the best music lesson I have ever had!”

If your child expresses a wish to have private music lessons, we are taking names for next term. Lessons cost $22 per half hour which represents good value for money. Instrument hire is $25 per term.

The biggest advantage is that lessons occur at school in school time so there is no after school travel involved.

Playgroup 2012

Our playgroup has commenced well in 2012 with facilitator Michelle Stuart from the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery back this year with fun and creative activities for the children to do. This week at playgroup Alan Caldow and workers from Family Support attended and chatted to the parents about support networks available to families. Morning tea was provided.

Playgroup is every Wednesday commencing at 9:15am. New members welcome!

P&C Meeting Change of Day

Please be advised that due to a recent survey and to some members experiencing difficulty attending Monday afternoon meetings, that the P&C meetings will now be held on the second Friday of each month.

The next meeting will be the AGM on Friday 9^th March at 3:15pm.

All new parents are welcome.

Gardening Fairy

Some of you may not realise but we have a secret gardener who comes in her spare time and plants lovely rows of flowers and natives to beautify our school.

Recently this gardening fairy planted a row of natives alongside the K-2 verandah and some time back planted a lovely row of petunias along the path to the library. Mrs Perger thought she had a secret admirer, but no, it was the gardening fairy aka Julie Grills. Thank you Julie.

The SRC are holding a charity fundraiser for Epilepsy: “Go Purple For Epilepsy” will be held on March 21^st. Getting involved is easy. Students bring a gold coin donation and dress in purple!

Following the success of last year’s Country Dance the Tallong Community Focus Group is again hosting a Bush Dance.

WHEN: Saturday 24^th March

BAND: Mountain Dew (there will be a caller)

Principal’s Report

The Kanga’s are back in their now freshly painted classroom, our school has been successful in receiving a $30,000 solar grant from the government and I was recently told we have been allocated funding to place a new retaining wall around our playing field.

These maintenance and improvement works are very exciting. The solar panels grant will include solar panels on the COLA roof, rainwater tanks in 3 locations and software that will engage students in data collection.

A working bee will be held on 11^th March to erect a cricket net around the cricket pitch. We are also investigating the possibly of replacing the cement pitch with a synthetic one.

We are very excited about these recent investments in our school and the benefits they provide to our students.

Bunnings Fundraiser

Our school will be hosting the sausage sizzle at Bunnings in Mittagong on Sunday 1^st April. If you can spare a couple of hours of your time it would be much appreciated. This event should be a fantastic opportunity to fund raise, but many volunteers are required. Please let Liz McDonald know of your availability ASAP and then mark it on your calendar.

P&C Meeting Change of Day

The next meeting will be the AGM on Friday 9^th March at 3:15pm.

SRC NEWS

The SRC met for the first time for 2012 last Wednesday. Two fundraisers were decided upon.

A charity fundraiser for Epilepsy: “Go Purple For Epilepsy” will be held on March 21^st. Getting involved is easy. Students bring a gold coin donation and dress in purple for the day. More information closer to the event.

Another SRC initiative is Freezing Fun Fridays. Ice blocks will be available for sale by the SRC on Fridays for 50c throughout Term 1.

Principal’s Report

This week Mrs Neale completed Best Start assessments on our Kindergarten students. Feedback to parents about information arising from these assessments will be given out in early March.

Mrs Neale and I have also completed initial spelling assessments on students in 2-6 and this information will be informing our teaching in Spelling.

Some parents have made appointments to discuss the year ahead and their child’s learning. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment if you have any queries or concerns. We are always happy to meet with you.

ICAS Assessments

As in previous years, we offer the International Competitions and Assessments For Schools tests for students in years 3-6.

These are a good way to practise exam conditions and gain some information about general achievement. The assessments have a fee attached.

Breakfast Club Reminder

Tallong’s 2012 Apple Granny of the Year

Nominate your Granny to be Tallong’s Apple Granny of the Year. We want you to tell us, in 50 words or less, why your Granny, Nanna, or Grandma is the best in the world. The winner will be announced at the opening ceremony of the Tallong Apple Festival day at 10am on Sunday 6^th May and will receive a trophy. All Grannies must have a Tallong connection and be present at the Apple Day Festival.

Shrunken Apple Head Character Competition

This competition is open to school age children. Rules for the competition and instructions on how they are made are also available at www.tallong.com.au .

The three categories for the Best Shrunken Head Character are:

· Kindergarten to Year 2 (inclusive)

· Year 3 to Year 6 (inclusive)

· High School students

First Prize and Highly Commended will be given in each category. A Certificate and cash prize will be given to the first prize winner in each category.

Entries must be at Tallong Memorial Hall on Saturday the 5^th May between 9am and 11am. Please attach your name & category to the character.

Judging will take place prior to Apple Day.

Prize winners will be announced at 9.30am on Apple Day, Sunday 6^th May.

All entries become the property of Tallong Community Focus Group and will be sold on Apple Day

The decision of the judges will be final.

Instructions

Shrunken head apples are fun to make and very easy. They're a fantastic and creepy Halloween decoration and would be fun for kid’s parties. Apple head dolls are an age old folk art. Like corn husk dolls, apple head dolls came about as a craft and a toy made from readily available items. Creating apple heads requires the use of sharp tools, so this craft is not suitable for very young children.

Things You'll Need

Apple, Corer, Peeler, Paring Knife, Small Bowl, 1 Cup Lemon Juice, 1TBSP Salt, Baking Rack

How to Make Them

1. Mix salt and lemon juice together in a small bowl.

2. Use the corer to remove the core of the apple.

3. Peel all the skin from the apple using the peeler.

4. Soak the apple in the bowl for ten minutes.

5. Carve holes for eyes and mouth using the tip of the peeler or paring knife.

6. To create a nose or eyebrows, remove apple around those areas so that they stick out of the face.

7. Place the carved apple back in the bowl to soak for another two minutes. This preserves the apple so it doesn't act moldy or rot quickly

8. Remove the apple from the bowl and place it on the baking rack.

9. Store the rack in a dry place for five to seven days. When you remove them, they'll look fantastically spooky

Tips & Warnings

· You can get really creative with carving the facial features. Remember that the apple is going to shrink so it will look different from the way you carve it. That's the fun!

· While the apples are drying out, check on them a few times. You may want to turn them upside down after a few days.

· Shrunken head apples can be decorated by putting hats on them, sparkles, sticking pins in them, etc. Again, get creative!

· If children are going to do this project, adult supervision will be required.

· Adults should handle all of the apple cutting.

Rules:

•A photo of someone or something in Tallong that you love. The subject could be a person, a pet, a building or scenery.

•Photos have to have been taken in the Tallong District in the last 12 months.

•Entrants must be amateur photographers and the photo must be their own work.

•Entrants can submit up to 3 photos as prints only. Photos are to be in colour. Prints are to be mounted on cardboard of A4 size. Prints are not to be digitally enhanced.

•Entries are to have the Entry Form affixed to the back of the cardboard.

•Laws must not be breached when taking the photo. Entrants have to have obtained permission of any people featured in the photo. Permission must be given by parents/guardians if photos are of children under 16.

•By entering, entrants grant the Tallong Apple Day Festival Committee the right to publish and exhibit their photos.

•The judge's decision is final. If the winners are unable to be contacted, after reasonable attempts have been made, the prize will go to the runner up.

Tallong PS Newsletter Term 1 Week 2

Welcome back everyone to an exciting year ahead. We are very pleased that, due to new enrolments, we have two full-time classroom teachers for this year which is just fantastic. It was so wonderful, on Monday morning, to see our five new Kindergarten students bright-eyed and buzzing with enthusiasm as they embark on their educational journey.

I was also very excited to have five energetic and eager boys in Year 3 who have moved up into my room from the Koalas, ready to take on new challenges.

Both classes have made a very settled start to the year and Mrs Neale and I are very excited about the year ahead.

Thursday Afternoon Club Commencing!!

Margaret Botticchio has very kindly offered to run an Art Club on Thursday afternoons, commencing at 3:15pm and finishing at 4:30pm. Chloe and Heidi Wursten have offered to assist Mrs Botticchio which is very much appreciated. As there will be resources needed, we ask that a $2 gold coin donation is paid each week per student.

Please supply students with afternoon tea if they are attending.

Music Tuition

Keva Abotomey will continue to teach class recorder to our students, K-2 and 3-6, on Fridays. Some students are attending the Opera House this year to perform in the Combined School’s Instrumental Ensemble and Miss Abotomey will be assisting them in this preparation as well. Keva has also been asked by the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium to give private music tuition to students of parents who requested this at the end of last year. Private tuition will take place during school time, and days and times will be known to us soon. A note is going home shortly with these students, with further information about this program. Payment has to be finalised promptly and before tuition can commence. Payment details are outlined in the note.

Kangas Classroom

We are pleased to report that the 3-6 senior classroom will be receiving a new fresh coat of paint. This will commence tomorrow. We have been conducting our lessons in the library and will continue to do so until our classroom has had its “freshen up”.

Dinner at Santa Sabina…

The Tallong Community Dinner at Santa Sabina College on Saturday 25^th February is proving very popular. Numbers are limited and already dozens of bookings have been made. So, if you haven’t yet done so, make up a table and book it in – as soon as possible.

The guest speaker is the well-known author, broadcaster, and concerned environmentalist, Paul Collins. He says: “If we respect the world, we will respect the environment. We will respect other creatures, other species, and in a way I think we will respect ourselves much better. Sadly, we cannot bring back what has already been lost to extinction.”

The evening will begin at 6pm with nibbles and drinks followed by a Twilight Walk in the various ecological systems on the campus. Dinner is at 7.30pm. Paul will speak after the main course but there will be plenty of opportunity for questions and a chat after the dinner. The cost is $15pp. Drink is BYOG. Please note that the whole Santa Sabina campus is smoke-free.

Movie Time

Our summer movie season continues with two films that will appeal particularly to children, but to adults as well. The first will be shown after the Tallong Community Picnic on Saturday 28^th January.

The annual picnic is a popular event. Starting at noon, picnickers are invited to bring their own food and drink. BBQ facilities will be provided. It’s a great opportunity for everybody in the village to get together.

The main feature after lunch is the exciting hit Australian movie Red Dog, based on a legendary true story. It tells the tale of the Red Dog who united a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long lost master.

But earlier in the week, at 2pm on Tuesday 24^th January is another Australian classic Happy Feet.

The story takes place in the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song. But one penguin is born who cannot sing.

On the other hand, he knows how to tap dance, something the other penguins have never seen before!

Both films are ideal holiday fun for all audiences. So, roll up and enjoy Australian film-making at its best.

School Prize-winners…

Last month, the Tallong Public School held a very successful Presentation Assembly for 2011 before a large audience of appreciative parents, teachers and the Mayor of Goulburn, local Tallong resident Geoff Kettle.

Principal Sue Matthews welcomed the crowd and was full of praise for her pupils. The TCFG Community Citizenship Award was presented by TCFG President Margaret Bottichio to Tyson Lewis.

The Lions Club – Tony Cosgrove Award for emerging leadership was presented by Lion Walter Darda to Finlay Maguire. Brandon Porter won the TPS Citizenship Award and Alexander McDonald won the Pru Goward Award for reading improvement.

The Assembly opened with a music performance by the children under the tutorship of Miss K Abotomey. And the afternoon wound up with a Sing-A-Long and a visit by a large man with a white beard and a sack of presents who arrived on the Tallong Fire Truck.

Tango One Bravo…

The Tallong Rural Fire Service is now the proud owner of a new Category 1 Fire Truck. The Isuzu FTS755 is an important upgrade for the Brigade as it has ergonomically designed pump outlets and increased tank capacity.

“Tallong One Bravo” has an extra 55 horsepower over the old tanker which means response times should be improved. With the Brigade having to deal with motor vehicle accidents and highway assistance as well as fires, every second counts.

The new truck is equipped with instant response 20 and 25-mm diameter reel mounted hoses on the rear deck and its 38-mm semi-percolating hoses coupled together can reach more than 300 metres.

One of the most dangerous aspects of the Rural Fire Fighter’s job is a fire over-run. This happens when a unit is caught out by a rapidly advancing fire front with no time to make a retreat.

This is an extremely rare occurrence, but crew safety is a highlight in the new Cat 1 with a spray system operated from inside the cab. With the touch of a button, a continuous spray of water flows over and under the cab, around the wheels and over the surrounding grass. And the crew are kept safe inside.

Tallong RFS meet at the Fire Shed every Tuesday evening at 7.30 pm. Visitors and potential new members are always welcome.

Calling all Grannies…

The Tallong Apple Day Festival committee is calling for nominations for the Tallong Granny of the Year award to commemorate Granny Smith apples. They originated in Eastwood, NSW, in 1868 from a chance seedling propagated by Granny Maria Ann Smith. We’re looking for nominations in fewer than 50 words for Tallong’s best Granny.

All nominated Grannies must be present at the Festival on Sunday 6^th May next. The winner’s name will go on a perpetual trophy and she will get a replica to take home. Nominations please in the TCFG box at the Tallong General store.

So, all you Tallong grandkids: tell us who Tallong’s best Granny is for 2012.

The Tallong Apple Day Committee would like to invite you to participate in the 2012 Apple Day Festival scheduled for the 6th of May 2012. Sites are 3m wide and approx 4m deep, from the kerb of the road to the fence-line. For a larger area you may require multiple sites. The entry fee will be $25 per site. If you require electricity then there will be an additional charge of $15 per site. For amusements/rides the fee will be $40.

NOTE: Prepared food stalls are required to comply with the Food Act, 2003 and Food Standards Code, and will have to pay Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s inspection fee of $30. The inspection fee must be included with your stallholder fee. We will notify Council and the NSW Food Authority on receipt of your application.

Party time…

Christmas is a-coming and fast… and the Tallong Christmas Party arrangements are in full swing. The party is on Saturday 10^th December at the Tallong Memorial Hall starting at 5.30pm with a barbecue organised by the Rural Fire Service and the Tallong Community Focus Group. They will also provide nibbles, salads and desserts. Adults should BYOG and soft drinks will be available for sale.

Santa will arrive at 7pm on board an RFS truck with a bag full of goodies. And there be children’s games from 7.30pm. We expect to be finished by 8.30pm. We are looking for decorations for the Christmas tree and some festive items suitable for Christmas hampers to be presented as ‘lucky door prizes’ on the night.

Entry is by a gold coin donation. But for catering purposes we need to know the numbers of adults and children. So please let us know if you are coming by Thursday 1 December at the latest. Tallong Community Dinner at Santa Sabina College, February 25, 2012 - Book Now!

We’re also looking for bookings for next year’s dinner at Santa Sabina on the theme of the Native Plants of Tallong on Saturday 25 February. We’re already getting inquiries so it’s likely to be very popular and the numbers are going to be limited. So why not make up a table and book it in.

Guest speaker will be the well-known author, environmentalist, and broadcaster Paul Collins who will talk about environmental aspects of the Southern Highlands and in particular the Tallong region. He is well known as a witty and inspirational speaker and author of a popular book on the history of bushfires in Australia.

Police Patrols…

Goulburn Mayor Geoff Kettle told the Community Outreach meeting in Tallong this month that a speed gun trailer is to be put in the village of Tallong in the near future. This will be backed up with police patrols targeting speeding. So be well advised to keep to the 50kph speed limit going through the village.

The Outreach meeting also decided on action over the naming and numbering of streets and roads in Tallong. The meeting agreed the present situation was unworkable. For example, the confusion of Bumballa Street vs Bumballa Road has resulted in emergency vehicles arriving at the wrong address on a regular basis. It was agreed that a small action committee of the TCFG Secretary and a Council member will investigate the whole problem and recommend solutions to the Council.

Many residents will be pleased to learn from Council that the dip in the Highland Way between the railway underpass and the Hume Highway is scheduled to be removed in next year’s work program.

Before the meeting, the Council Manager and Works Supervisor carried out a site inspection to examine road conditions in the Tallong region. Concerns raised with the Council included the repairing of pot holes, breaking edges and the narrowing of roads, vegetation growth along road edges, and faint road markings.

In particular, some residents are worried about a narrowing shoulder of the road near the railway bridge on Old Wingello Road where canoes and kayaks are launched onto the adjacent dam. The safety of people using this launching place is of concern when traffic appears unexpectedly. Council undertook to inspect the site with a view to widening and strengthening the road shoulder.

She’ll be Apples

A new feature of next year’s Apple Festival will be the Tallong Granny of the Year award. Granny Smith apples originated in Eastwood, NSW, in 1868 from a chance seedling propagated by Granny Maria Ann Smith. So to recognise the famous Granny Smith green apple with its crisp, juicy flesh, nominations in less than 50 words are invited for Tallong’s Best Granny. A condition of entry is that all Grannies nominated must agree to be present at the Festival on Sunday 6^th May next. A short list of five finalists will be chosen.

A perpetual trophy will honour the winning Tallong Granny of the Year and there will be a trophy for the winner to take home as well. Please put your nominations in the TCFG box at the Tallong General Store. Close of nominations is Monday 16^th April.

Please don’t forget the TCFG home-made produce stall at Apple Day. When you are making your jams, chutneys and other items please make one or two extra for the stall. Remember, all the proceeds will come back to benefit the community.

Coming in…

The Tallong Community Focus Group has a new Committee elected at the annual general meeting on 1^st September. President is Margaret Botticchio; Vice President Lionel Willison, Secretary Geoff Clark, Treasurer Dugald Black and the Committee members are Janet Black, Sharyn Ward, and John Lombard. Helen Wise was elected but resigned for personal reasons.

The TCFG is an active community group that lobbies the Council and other regulatory bodies on behalf of all Tallong residents. It also helps to bring the community together in an enjoyable social setting. So, it has two important roles to play in the life of the community. And it costs only $2.50 to be a member. What a bargain to have your say in what happens in your village!

President Margaret Botticchio told the AGM she thought the community spirit shown over the past year had been brilliant. She said the integration of various groups and the TCFG had been impressive and strong links have been forged between community individuals, groups and the TCFG. Special thanks were given to the Committee and office bearers, in particular to the outgoing Treasurer Mike Kennedy who has been playing an ever increasing role in organising the Newsletter, publicity in the Goulburn Post, as well as being the Apple Day convenor and the many other duties involved in being Treasurer.

The Community Outreach meeting on 22^nd November at 6.30pm at the Tallong Memorial Hall is an important event to meet Goulburn Mulwaree Council representatives and senior staff. It is a unique opportunity for the Tallong community to raise issues directly with Council representatives. So, if you have any questions contact the TCFG and we will submit a list to the Council prior to the meeting. Advance notice of your concerns helps the meeting to run smoothly and everyone gets their say. It is a golden opportunity to raise issues directly with the decision makers.

Walking out…

On Saturday 25^th February next year we’re planning a walk, talk and dinner at Santa Sabina on the theme of the Native Plants of Tallong. There will be a walk at 6pm followed by a three course dinner at Santa Sabina and an engaging guest speaker, Paul Collins, a historian, environmentalist, broadcaster, writer and former Catholic priest.

He is the author of twelve books including one many Tallong residents may know Burn: the epic story of bushfire in Australia. Paul is an inspiring and witty speaker. He is well known as a commentator on environmental and population issues. He will talk about the Tallong bushland and environmental aspects of the Southern Highlands. He will be speaking from his wide experience as a historian, a conservationist and an environmentalist.

We expect this to be a very popular evening and the numbers will be limited, particularly as the evening will cost only $15 a head, BYO. We will need firm bookings so please ask for Janet or Margaret for information. More details about pre-booking will be in the next Newsletter but put the date in your diary: Sat 25^th February 2012.

Firing up…

Chris Boland, President TRFB, reports: During a quiet and fire free period, the Tallong Brigade received a call to attend a motor accident on Highland Way south of Glenrock Station. Tallong One Alpha responded to find a Holden sedan had lost control on a southbound bend and was lying upside down in a drainage ditch. Thankfully the driver had crawled free and was unhurt, but the vehicle was leaking so much raw fuel that the petrol had filled the rear wheel wells. While there was no immediate environmental threat to any waterways, brigade members swiftly applied a blanket of fire retardant foam over and around the car. This substantially reduced the risk of accidental combustion, especially from sparks when the towie arrived to extricate the vehicle from the ditch.

With the new fire season running from 1^st October until 31^st March, now is a good time to clear away all those piles of firewood from underneath your wooden veranda and have a close look at all those overhanging tree branches. Also from 1^st October, a Permit is required before lighting any fires in the open. The procedure is very simple, just a phone call to the Tallong Brigade Captain, Kevin Roberts, on 0418 221 019. He can issue the Permit and will advise how to proceed with notifying surrounding neighbours and Fire Control local HQ.

Being Crafty…

Calling all knitters, embroiderers and crocheters, all makers of jams and jellies, chutneys and relishes, all makers of items useful and funny – and we’re being non gender-specific here!

As one of the highlights of next year’s Apple Day, we want to have a Tallong Community Focus Group handicraft and produce stall selling items donated during the year. We are looking for help with donations. Can you assist us, please?

Perhaps before you put the knitting needles away for the year, could you make us an apple-themed beanie for instance? And whenever you make a batch of jam or chutney, could you make an extra one or two bottles for us? When the lavender blooms, would you dry some for making lavender bags later? If you enjoy wood-turning or pottery, could you give us a piece or two? Even if you don’t have time to make the jam yourself, if you could donate the fruit, we can organise the making.

Lights down… action…

Our summer movie program begins on Saturday 5^th November with the brilliant musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell play two little girls from Little Rock who grew up on the wrong side of the track. They are lounge singers on a transatlantic cruise, working their way to Paris. And even though Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend, the two singers enjoy the company of any eligible men they meet on the way… Curtain up is at 7pm at the Memorial Hall and light refreshments will be served. All welcome.

Tallong Christmas Party – December 10^th

The traditional Tallong Village Christmas party will be held on Saturday 10^th December 2011 starting at 5.30pm at the Memorial Hall. We’re looking for gold coin donations. Please bring a decoration for the tree, and some festive items suitable for Christmas hampers which will be raffled on the night. There will be lots of games for the children.

Food will include a BBQ, salads and desserts. BYOG but there will be a canteen for soft drinks. The highlight of the evening will be the arrival of Santa Claus.

Tallong Public School is now enrolling for 2012, so it’s time to contact the School Principal Sue Matthews on 4841 0292 for an appointment. Choosing your local public primary school means your child is never too far from home!

There are great advantages in our small size as it generates great school spirit and pride among students, families and teachers. There is a high level of local community involvement. The Tallong School offers before and after school care.

We’re pretty sure many members of our Community have some brilliant ideas that could be developed into cultural or social projects for Tallong. You know people who say ‘if only Tallong had a night of…’ or ‘if only the Committee would put together a program of…’

Well, now’s your chance. We would welcome any suggestions of practical projects that could be developed for the benefit of the whole Community.

General Business: (aspects of the President’s report which generated some discussion)

Tallong Public School before school care: there was a question in regards to the background to the program of community volunteers who assist the school between 8 and 8.30am each school day. All volunteers have been through a training and Crim-check program and have had a very positive experience with the 3-13 cheery students who attend.

Tallong Village Markets – there was a question about why the markets had disappeared. Although the previous trials were successful, it was stated that produce was seasonal in any case. However, a new co-ordinator is required for these to be resurrected.

Business arising from the Treasurer’s Report:

There was a discussion about how the Apple Day profits were distributed to community groups and the original allocation of a grant from the TCFG to the Tallong Recreational Reserve Trust.

Further Business –

Streetscape Volunteer Program: Mike Kennedy the convenor gave the background to this GM Council accredited program. After an induction session volunteers will engage in local care and maintenance projects in the Tallong which are agreed with Council. Any residents who have ideas were urged to submit them to the TCFG committee. Carl Wise said that clearance of vegetation near the Highland/Bumballa Streets intersection is necessary as a safety measure. Paul Holmes asked if there was an overall plan for the Village/region. It was stated that initially this is to be a hands-on program but that such a plan could be considered by the committee in the near future and suggestions would be welcome.

Tallong R.F.S. News

This is the first of a series of articles aimed at local residents interested in the activities of their village Fire Service.

Currently the Tallong Brigade is equipped with two Category 1 tankers and a Category 17 Long Wheelbase Landrover. The Cat Is are Isuzu four wheel drive trucks weighing in at over 13 tonnes with full 3600 litre water tanks. Their call signs are "Tallong One Alpha" and "Tallong One Bravo" and although, they look big and bulky, they are, in fact, surprisingly agile, and happily negotiate quite amazing inclines and obstacles. Some of our members recently experienced these capabilities during a Rural Fire Driver's Course over Mount Marulan and the Cookbundoons, details of which will be the subject of a later issue. The Rural Fire Service Continually updates its fleet and equipment and later this year "One Bravo" will depart Tallong to be replaced by a more modern unit.

The Cat 17 is usually crewed by the Brigade Captain and up to three volunteer Firies, and is used as a fast response and reconnaissance vehicle; it carries a useful 1500 litres of water and like its big Cat 1 brothers is equipped with Garmin GPS, VHF, and UHF communications.

The Cat 1 tanker is outfitted with crew "Fire Over-run" protection systems, 20 and 38mm diameter hoses and fittings and comprehensive first aidsupplies including "Packer Whackers" (Defibrillators). Hopefully the brigade will never have to use them, but as we respond to more and more MVAs, (Motor Vehicle Accidents.) it's comforting to know they are on board. Interestingly, personnel using the de-fibs are guided though their operation by recorded voice instructions activated by the kit opening. Also residing in each vehicle is another piece of equipment hopefully never

required..... "Trauma Teddy".

Another useful feature of the Cat 1 tanker is its ability to replenish a second tanker while that vehicle is engaged in fighting a fire. The replenishing truck connects a 65mm diameter hose from its own outlet to an inlet in the belly of the fire fighting Cat 1 and engages its diesel pump. Within three minutes it has transferred its contents to the other vehicle, effectively doubling its capacity and ensuring that the first truck can continue fire fighting without the need to break off the engagement and drive to a re-filling point.

The Tallong Brigade Fire Trucks routinely re-fill from the "Painted Pot" reservoir opposite the Memorial Drive Fire shed, but often during a practice drill will travel to the Highland Way viaduct and simply 'snort' from, Barber's Creek.

This first article has probably been allabout big red trucks and big boy's toys, but later issues will highlight the training, incident reports, and personalities telling their own stories. We think it's interesting and hopefully the readers of the Tallong Community 'Focus Group will gain some insight into the operations and the people involved in the Tallong Rural Fire Brigade.

Apple Day 2011

Wow! What a great day we had this year. The crowds were the biggest yet and we have had lots of positive feedback from the community & from visitors. The Focus Group has distributed the funds raised on the day to the groups in our community who make the day possible. We have kept some aside to pay our insurance which covers the Focus Group for all of the events and projects that it holds each year such as Apple Day, the Christmas Party and Cleanup Australia day.

Tallong Public School News

Tallong Public School now has a permanent Principal. After many months in the role of acting Principal, Sue Mathews has been appointed to the position permanently. Congratulations Sue.

On Thursday 19^th May, members of the Tallong Community Focus Group committee were treated to most impressive Power Point presentations by the primary class members at Tallong Public School on research they had done on fauna found in the district.

The before School Care Breakfast Club has been up and running since the beginning of

Term 2 with between 4 and 7 children making use of it on various days during the week.

This is a school-initiated activity to help working parents who may find it difficult to get to work by 9am if they cannot drop their children at school before 8.30 which is the time that teachers officially assume play-ground duty. Having breakfast at school is also intended to make getting out the door that much easier in the morning!

However, more volunteers are still needed to ease the load. If you can spare about 50 minutes, between 7.50am and 8.40am once a fortnight, the school office would like to hear from you. So far the only day fully covered is Tuesday, and the rest only by volunteers working weekly or more often (thank you Faye, Dianne and Chrissie!). The job is easy – putting out cereal, pouring juice, making toast and washing up; the children are delightful and polite and there is always a teacher on site if there should be any problems. The aim is to have 2 volunteers on each day and a roster large enough to allow for illness or holidays away. Please help if you can.

The Mystery Remains

At Apple Day, an unknown boy’s photo, discovered in a box on the stage of the Memorial Hall (see above) was displayed in the hope that somebody could identify him. Several people commented that they thought he looked like Jim Watling and suggested he be approached.

Jim and Fran have now looked at the item and are convinced that he is no one they know and definitely not a member of the Watling family. So the mystery remains! Any other suggestions will be gratefully received.

St Stephens Church

St Stephens’s church now has a cross on the exterior. It has been a long time coming but now thanks to the efforts of our local signwriter and parishioner, Alan Weston, the finishing touch has been applied.

A Proposal to Form a “Tallong Streetscape Volunteer Group”

Proposal to Residents of Tallong

The TCFG are looking for expressions of interest from Tallong residents who might be interested in being part of a volunteer group to enhance the streetscape of the Tallong Village area by carrying out tasks outside of the Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s (GMC) scope of works. The group would operate under the auspices of the GMC and by the guidelines as set in the GMC Volunteers Handbook.

Scope of the Proposed Streetscape Volunteer Group

GMC have a scope of works for the Tallong area that is based on their ability to provide streetscape maintenance services within the confines of their budget.

From a maintenance perspective the Group would enhance the work of the GMC. i.e. edging of footpaths, weeding of public areas, whipper snipping of roadside verges within the Village boundaries, cleaning up of rubbish, pruning of shrubs along verges, removal of new growth trees, maintenance of the Memorial in the Park, maintenance around the “pot” and assistance to the elderly with maintenance of the nature strip in front of their homes.

The Group could also carry out projects to visually enhance areas of the Village eg. Doing something with the corner of Caoura Rd and the Highland Way such as maybe a stone wall with a Tallong Sign and/or some garden beds and improved handrails on the two sets of stairs.

What will GMC do for the Group

With Respect to Volunteers

· A volunteer induction to overview: roles & responsibilities of Volunteers & Council, Code of Conduct & OH&S Policy & Procedures, Hazard Reporting, Emergency Procedures, First Aid Provisions, Accident/Injury Insurance Provisions & Council Policies & Procedures that apply to Volunteers.

· Some one-off tasks requiring heavy equipment that would then allow the group to maintain an area.

· Risk Assessments to enable tasks to be carried out with safety.

· Provisions for the occasional Volunteer BBQ.

With Respect of Materials

· Mulch for weed suppression.

· Plants for revegetation & garden area creation.

· Temporary safety signage

· Loan of specialised equipment (following adequate training)

What will the Tallong Community Focus Group do for the Streetscape Group

The TCFG will provide:

· The organisation of the Group.

· The liaison with the GMC.

· Work schedules.

· Any required Safety Apparel.

· A post working bee BBQ.

What You Need to Provide to the Group

A commitment to the Group with respect of:

· Giving of your time.

· Adherence to safe work rules & procedures.

· Adherence to the guidelines of GMC’s Volunteer Handbook.

· To enjoy ourselves

· To improve our knowledge of our community & our Council

· To feel that we have achieved something for our community

· To make each working bee a social occasion, some work and some relaxation!

This is an opportunity to take part in a community activity with no meetings, no pressure to be there every time, a great sense of achievement and finish off with a sausage or two.

Apple Day 2011

Excitement is building within the Tallong Community Focus Group and the Apple Day Festival Committee as the preparations for Apple Day progress. Community groups such as the Rural Fire Brigade, Tallong School and their P& C, the Hall Trust, local church groups, other interested groups and individuals too numerous to mention are combining their efforts to make the 2011 Tallong Apple Day Festival “the best festival ever”.

This year we are asking everyone to spread the word that “the best festival ever” is on in Tallong on Sunday 1^st May, 2011. There will be free entertainment, games, archery, wood chop, displays, market stalls, competitions, a parade and our ever popular Bake-Off auction.

A highlight of Apple Day is our food court. There will be food to tantalise all taste buds. Sit back and enjoy coffee and a yummy dessert as you listen to the music of Jim Bennet.

Mountain Dew will be performing at the front of the hall. Patty McKinnon and Australia Sings will also be performing. This year we hope to have some surprise guest performers.

Mrs T’s Bake-Off Competition gives one and all the opportunity to display their culinary skills. Marulan Newsagency is sponsoring the Bake-Off. Applications are available at Tallong General Store, Marulan Newsagency and from our website www.tallong.com.au

The Apple Day Raffle is big this year and there are some wonderful prizes to win. A ticket costs only $2.00 and if you win I can guarantee you will be smiling from ear to ear. Highland Way Road Safety Survey.

The results of this survey show that the majority of residents in Tallong do not wish to see any change in speed limits on highland way. The results were about 70/30.

Tallong Picnic & Recreation Reserve Trust AGM.

The AGM for the Recreation Reserve Trust will be held on the 10^th March, 2011 at 7.30pm in the Tallong Memorial Hall.

Work on the playing field has been slowed by the heavy rain that we have had making it difficult for heavy machinery to operate there without becoming bogged. As a consequence quite a bit of shrubbery has resprouted and will require slashing before seeding can take place.

Boral Train Dust Notification.

The issue of dust blowing from the Trains carrying Limestone from the Boral Quarry has been raised with Boral management. I have been asked to encourage you to contact the Limestone Quarry site on 4820 3000 to report the issue. It would be especially helpful if you could call the next time you see it happen, as prevailing weather conditions and time of day can then be noted and factored into a response. The phone number is the site's main number and will connect you with Boral’s processes for recording and addressing external concerns.

We need some Volunteers on Apple Day for manning gates and displays. Even an hour of your time on Apple Day would lighten the load for the organisers and help make the day run smoothly. Focus Group Members BBQ
In 2010 we had a BBQ for our members to thank them for their support. Everyone who came said they enjoyed it very much and as a result we hope this will become an annual event. It was an excellent opportunity to meet and greet our members.
Tallong History Book Launch
What a success! We had a wonderful turnout of Tallong residence and guests to this significant event in Tallong’s history. Geoff Kettle, (Mayor of Goulburn/Mulwaree) whose family have resided in Tallong for several generations, launched the book, giving a personal and moving account of his strong family ties to the area. Thank you to the sub-committee who worked so hard researching and writing the book. This book would not have become a reality without the significant contribution from Tallong residents who provided photos, records and memories. The committee is very grateful to the Australian Historical Society, who provided a grant to assist us in the publication of ‘Tallong – A Heritage’. The book has been well received by the community. If you are yet to get your copy they are available at Tallong General Store and Marulan Newsagency. Cost is $20.00.
Community Christmas Party
The combined efforts of Tallong Rural Fire Service and the TCFG helped make this year’s Christmas Party a resounding success. The Fire Brigade cooked up a great BBQ and the TCFG provided the salads and desserts. It was all yummy. This combined with good company and the Christmas spirit made for a very happy time. Thank you to the Fire Brigade for delivering Santa to this year’s event. Santa, being as busy as he is at this time of year, was grateful to the Fire Brigade for organising the treats for the children. It was great that so many came along and enjoyed the party. Sue Montgomery was the happy winner of the hamper.
Apple Day 2011
Plans for Apple Day are progressing. We have an enthusiastic team on the committee. This year’s convener is Mike Kennedy. His capable and energetic committee are Geoff Clark, Faye Danckwardt, Ian Mitchell, Lynn Blazer, Lionel Willison, Sharyn Ward, Dugald & Janet Black& Vicky Kennedy. Additional assistance has been offered by some residents. If you can spare an hour or two on the day please contact Mike Kennedy, after 5pm on 48410330 or mob 0438619846. This year you can look forward to more free entertainment, games and giveaways. The Bake-Off is being sponsored by Marulan Newsagency and there will be great prizes for the winners of the different categories. The Apple of My Eye Photographic Competition is being sponsored by M&M Earthmoving. Winners of each category will be presented with a monetary prize. Tony Sheffield, from Highlife Magazine, will be judging the competition. This year our raffle tickets will be on sale well before the event and will be drawn on the day. A successful raffle will help us pay for our insurance and will help us give more back to community groups. With this in mind we will be offering community groups and club’s the opportunity to sell the tickets and then take half the money for what they sell. Sponsors are beginning to come forward and we would like to

Speed Limit Survey
Some residents have expressed concerns regarding the speeds limit along the Highland Way and the Focus Group has been asked to lobby the relevant Government Departments to have the speed limit reduced to 80kph. These residents see the Highland Way as being inadequate for coping with a 100kph speed limit because of its of varying widths, 100kph approach to the dip, the narrow viaduct, animals often on the road, the trees which line the road which could result in a vehicle heading for the trees in the event of a sudden stop and heavy vehicles are using the road frequently. With respect to the residents, we have decided to carry out a survey, to ascertain the feelings of the entire community. It is in your interest to register your opinion by filling out the form below and putting it in the Focus Group letter box at the Tallong General Store.

NO – the speed limit should remain at 100kph.
Bush Regeneration Project in the area bounded by Highland Way, Caoura Rd and Memorial Ave.
Work has been progressing on the site and it has been cleared of all unwanted material such as
dead, burnt and dying understory, tree stumps left after removal of trees and manmade rubbish, such as glass, plastic and metal.
There has been some survival from the fire, particularly with ground cover and Eucalyptus species. The top level consisting of trees is already well catered for as the taller Eucalyptus survived the fire and will eventually cast off their dead branches. There are many small Eucalyptus returning as well. Some seeding will be required in the SW corner. A good list of suitable plants has been obtained using the Botanist report published in "Tallong, a Heritage" as one of the sources.
Good News!
In 2010 the TCFG applied for a grant from NSW Government Community Building Partnership Program to put solar cells on the roof of the Tallong Memorial Hall and to provide heating for the hall interior. We have just received notice that our application has been successful but as yet are unsure as for how much etc. Hopefully, next winter, we will be able to heat the hall to a temperature that is more comfortable.

Vale: Maggie Thatcher

Maggie Thatcher passed away in October. Maggie has been an active member of our community since she and her husband George moved to Tallong. She spent many hours at our local school assisting the children with their reading and was an active member of the church and the Country Women’s Association. Maggie was a member of the Apple Day Committee from the beginning and ran the Bake-off. She will be sadly missed within the community.

Tallong Picnic & Recreation Reserve Trust

Work is continuing on restoring the “Old Tallong Cricket Ground”. Early in the year the trees that had taken over the area were knocked down and any retrievable timber was cut up by members of the community and taken for firewood. The stumps and other debris were pushed up into piles and they have recently been burnt off by the Rural Fire Service. The next task is to clear the smaller scrubs that have grown since the initial clearing and then to till the soil and spread some grass seed.

The Reserve Trust had applied, last year, to the Lands Department for a grant to set up amenities on the grounds and they have now approved the grant.

Apple Day Festival Dance

For our next Apple Day Festival we have decided to hold the dance on the 26^th of March 2011 so that it will be a bit warmer in the Hall. Everyone at this year’s dance had a great time even though it was a tad chilly in the hall so hopefully with the date set for a warmer time in the year we will have an even better time. We will provide more details as the date draws closer.
